PRESENT DAY

I get in the car and drive, despite the fact that I can hardly hold the wheel, my body is shaking so much. When I’m a safe distance away from the dentist, I pull over, wind down the window and dry heave for a solid five minutes. Eventually, I calm down enough to re-read the messages from ‘Esme’.

It sounded absurd, but look at the facts: Esme – dead. Max – dead. And now, Seema – dead. There was only me, Dave and Dylan left on the chat. Someone was targeting us. So who was going to be next?

I quickly google Seema’s name again, but nothing comes up. When I click on Surreywide.com, though, the top story is ‘Police cordon off Crowhurst dental surgery after anonymous 999 call’. There’s even a photo of the dentist’s, draped in yellow tape, and I can see Morris’s pug-face in the background.

Shit.

Maybe I should’ve stuck around to tell them what really happened – but what the hell could I tell them? That an undead influencer had risen from the grave to take revenge on her old flatmates? Somehow I don’t think Morris was going to buy that one, especially after everything that went down a year ago.

I’d phoned Dylan and Dave over and over, but there was no response from either of them. Not knowing what else to do, I try the group chat again.
